What Causes Discharge From The Both Nipples Upon Pressing?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Oct 2014
Question: Hello, I am a 23 year old woman. No children, normal periods, no family history of breast cancer.

I have had some nipple discharge when I press my nipples for a while. I asked my doctor and she told me that it could be my prolactin levels because I am constantly checking my nipples. She told me to stop so I am not sure if it improved.

However, since last month, my right nipple has been sore. I won't notice it unless I touch it. My left nipple has no soreness but right one does. Since breast cancer awareness month is coming up I follow their stories and hearing people's stories are starting to get me worried. I hear lots of stories of misdiagnosis. What could this pain be?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I understand your health concerns.
As per discharge is concerned if it is from both the nipples there is nothing much to worry except for raised prolactin levels which are otherwise easier to manage especially if mildly raised.
But the soreness in right side is not a good sign.
Try to do breast self examination (you can see videos widely available on internet) and in case you feel some lump or in case you are suspicious but not sure then visit a surgeon and he can advise you accordingly.
Most probable next step in case there is a lump will be an FNAC (fine needle aspiration and cytology) which is a simple but very informative test.
All the best.

Hi Doctor,

The discharge is from both breasts.

The soreness is in my right nipple.

I do self examinations often, and I haven't felt anything.

I went to my gynecologist last month for my annual and she felt my breasts, would she have told me if she felt anything abnormal?

Does this mean, I have cancer?

Brief Answer:
antibiotic course

Detailed Answer:
In my opinion chances of cancer are very low in your case seeing your age and especially if there is no family history of breast cancer.
If your gynecologist was satisfied with examination and didn't say anything then probably there is nothing to worry.
Just get your prolactin levels checked and take a course if antibiotic amoxiclav 625 mg thrice a day for 5 days.
I hope it will help you and let me know the report of prolactin so that in case needed I can give you treatment for the same.
Take care.
