What Causes Delayed Menstruation And Negative Pregnancy Test?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Aug 2017
Question: I am looking for counsel.

My period is 7- 9 days late.
I am 37 years old. (21 April 1980)

Usually it is very regular: 26-28 days, usually exactly 27, rarely up to 31.

My last period was 29 XXXXXXX I do monitor my cervical fluid and believe that I was fertile between 7-12 July, with ovulation around the 12th.

By the 16th July I noted the cervical fluid was thick & sticky, no odor.

19, 20, 21, 22 I had unprotected sex.

Twice without withdrawal. (20,22)

I am not experiencing any typical pregnancy symptoms, nausea etc.

I have talked several (5) over the counter pregnancy tests in the last 5 days and they were all negative.

I have scheduled a blood test for 9 days from now.

Any counsel is greatly appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Hormonal disturbance can be there

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand the concerns.
Delayed periods can be due to pregnancy or hormonal disturbance like hypothyroidism or hyperprolactinemia.
If the urine pregnancy test is negative, then the pregnancy is ruled out.
I will suggest you to get your thyroid and prolactin levels done and get further treatment accordingly.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Why do you rule out pregnancy completely?

I read HCG levels can be low in some women.

Can you provide more detail?

I have had hypothyroidism in the past, but have not been tested recently.

I don't know what hyperprolactinemia is.

Thank you for your kind help

Brief Answer:
Increased prolactin levels

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
In pregnancy, hCG levels are increased .
The urine pregnancy test is sensitive enough to detect the pregnancy even at a low hCG level of 35.
However, you can get a blood test to know the levels of hCG.
Hyperprolactinemia is the increase in levels of prolactin hormone which leads to delay in periods and headache. So, this should be tested if the pregnancy has been ruled out as a cause for delayed periods.
