What Causes Delay In Menstrual Bleeding After Taking I-pill?

Posted on Mon, 15 Feb 2016
Question: Respected Doctor,
Me and my wife had unprotected sex, not exactly, as i didnt ejaculated in her, but then too for pregnancy prevention she took i-pill within an hour of sex. Doctor we didn't want a baby in this phase of our life.
She had her periods on 19th of last month and she took i-pill on 6th. Till today she has neither experienced any bleeding nor she had her normal periods.
Is there any chance of pregnancy? If yes, How can it be ruled out?
Warm Regards

Brief Answer:
need more information

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to healthcare magic.I understand your concern.
Iam Dr.Srilatha gynaecologist.I have gone through your query.

In my opinion ipill is 95% effective if taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. So the chances of pregnancy are very rare as you have taken within stipulated time.

Urine pregnancy test can be done to rule out pregnancy at home. I would like to know the following things :-
1)Whether her menstrual cycles are regular or not?
2)When is her expected date of the period?
Kindly let me know further discussion.

Looking forward to hear from you.
Best regards...Dr.Srilatha

Respected Doctor,
Her menstrual cycle is normal and regular and the expected date of period is today or tomorrow. And tomorrow certainly.
Please suggest that what may be done if she does not gets her regular cycle tomorrow?
She experienced a slight pain in her right side of lower abdomen for few seconds, two-three days back and apart from this she did not had any kind of problem till date. No side effects of I-pill at all neither bleeding nor stomach pain.
This is for the first time she had taken this medicine.
Please Suggest.

Brief Answer:
The chances of pregnancy are rare

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,thanks for the information.

It is known from your information that the expected period is 14 th or 15 th.

I-pill is a high dose of progesterone hormone. It causes hormonal imbalance.
Due to imbalance of hormones the timing and amount of bleeding of period might be effected.

Due to this, the period can be come early or late and the bleeding can be lighter or heavier or irregular.

In your case there is no chance of pregnancy as the ejaculation did not occur and Ipill was also taken.
Moreover the 6 th comes under safe period as per the menstrual cycle where the chances of pregnancy are nil even with unprotected intercourse.

So the delay in period can be due to Ipill effect rather than pregnancy.

The pain in abdomen can be a muscle pain or any premenstrual phase pain or cramp.

As I explained you in previous answer the Ipill is 95% effective if taken within stipulated time.

So relax. Nothing to worry. The chances of pregnancy are nil in your case.

Hope this satisfies your query.

Feel free to discuss further.

Best regards...Dr.Srilatha
