What Causes Continuous Rise Of GGT Value After Gym Exercise Program?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Apr 2015
Question: I had a consultation with Dr. Pangiotis Zografakis but he was unable to explain the continuous rise of GGT value from 31 U/L in May 2013 to 142 U/L in February 2015. The rapid increase coincided with an gym exercise program and walking 4 km 3 times a week since April 2014. Can this be an explanation and if so what should I do?

Brief Answer:
Elevated liver functions

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns.

I see you have already discussed the elevated LFTs with Dr. Zografakis and he did not completely answer your question. You are now wondering if your exercise program may be the blame for the elevations in your GGT. Since your overall weight has continued to decline and you are not on any medications then I would wonder if the exercise maybe to blame for the liver elevations. I would recommend reducing your exercise program to walking only and avoiding the gym. If your gym workouts are too strenuous you could be causing muscle damage and fatigue which may cause the elevated GGT. Walking would not be as strenuous and hence less likely to cause the elevated GGT.

I recommend then just a walking program and having your GGT repeated in 1-2 months.

I hope this answers your question. Please contact HCM again with your health care concerns and questions
