What Causes Constipation And Loss Of Sense Of Smell When Diagnosed With Hydrocephalus?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: Along with my symptoms of difficulty walking, memory loss, and urinary incontinence, by which my neurologist was able to diagnose hydrocephalus, I have two other symptoms that I have yet to see mentioned in my reading on the subject; namely, constipation and loss of sense of smell. Is it possible that I suffer from another neurological condition besides hydrocephalus, or do my other symptoms stem from the medications I now take?

Brief Answer:
Possibility of normal pressure hydrocephalus

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
The earlier description of your symptoms are suggestive of hydrocephalus possibly normal pressure hydrocephalus.
Brain imaging and csf manometery is necessary for diagnosis.
Symptoms may be gait abnormalities, urinary complains, behavioural changes, smell abnormalities. Bowel incontinence is more related rather than constipation to this condition.
The drug like duloxetine causes constipation and may be the reason for your problem.
Other medications are good according to your condition.
Continue treatment under a neurologist for early recognition and correct diagnosis.
Some more medication like acetazolamide can be tried.
