What Causes Constant Urge To Urinate After A Hysterectomy?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Apr 2015
Question: I previously spoke to Dr Raichle.
My previous question was feeling a lump vaginally after a hysterectomy and anterior repair. Also symptoms of discomfort and the feeling I need to urinate all the time. I was told everything was well but after discussing with you I went back to see surgeon. He now tells me I have a rectocele and the anterior wall is still weak and the surgery "could have been better". He has now advised me to see another gynaecologist in view of perhaps more surgery. I feel let down that he didn't tell me all this at the previous consultation. I was led to believe it had been successful and the bowel was slightly prolapsed but would not cause a problem.
My question now is would the rectocele have been evident when he operated? Could it all have been done at the same time? Would the rectocele cause lower abdo pain? Would it cause pressure on the bladder giving me the feeling of needing to pass urine? He said it was a moderate prolapse. Do you think it advisable to have surgery 6 months later and would it be a big operation? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Answers to your questions

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

I can understand your concerns.

Answering your questions:

1) Sometimes rectocoele are evident during surgery but sometimes it occurs AFTER a hysterectomy because the uterus and its supports are removed or changed leading to the rectocoele becoming evident ONLY afterwards.

If you did not have the symptoms you are having now then most probably it has occurred after surgery.

2) if the rectocoele would have been evident at that time then YES it could have been operated at that time.

3) Yes it can cause lower abdominal pain and also constipation.

4) If it is very big then YES it can irritate bladder to pass urine frequently.

5) If its a moderate prolapse and you are able to bear the symptoms till 6 months then YES YOU CAN WAIT. But if symptoms are very discomforting get it operated right away.

6) NO its not a big operation and takes 20 minutes XXXXXXX in good hands.

Thanks for your answers.
To clarify some things -
The rectocele had been noted by another Dr prior to the surgery.
When I said 6 months I meant would it be better to wait as I only had the previous surgery 6 months ago? So letting my body recover.
What is the recovery period after this? Is it no lifting etc for few weeks? When would I be able to lead a normal life?
As the anterior wall is still weak would the surgery help that as well?
What are the success rates on an anterior and posterior repair?
I am normally well, on no medication, well within normal BMI and do not smoke.
The symptoms I have are discomfort from the "lump", urge to pass urine, abdo pain especially to the right and the need to pass a stool more frequently.
