Posted on Mon, 30 Nov 2015
Question: I had a microdiscetomoy about 1.5 yrs ago and am still having very bad pain in my lower back and hip region. I am seeing a PT and she has told me that I need to stretch out hamstrings, soas, and hamstrings for they are very tight. I believe her because my GP told me the same. I just want the pain to go away....

Brief Answer:
The pain is due to muscle spasm which needs to be relieved.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
The brain has an inhibitory effect on overall muscle contraction. The signals from the brain reach downward through the spinal nerves which exit from either side of the vertebrae. Even after the microdiscectomy the entrapment of the spinal nerves might not be completely relieved thus blocking the signals from the brain. This may cause the muscles to go into spasm. If a muscle is unnecessarily contracted (working), it is definitely going to get tired due to the collection of metabolites like lactate which is thus responsible for your pain. The stretching exercises can undo the effect of this spasm and strengthen (increase the capacity of) these muscles and thereby can provide relief.
Apply hot compress and aggressively do the stretching exercises. Take pain medication only when very essential.
I hope that you understand the scenario.
