What Causes Chronic Prostatitis?

Posted on Mon, 4 May 2015
Question: Hi, I was put on flagyl at 500mg twice per day for 2 weeks for chronic prostatitis. This is after taking Norofloxcin for 6 weeks. My doctor wants to cover all bacteria to make sure it works. I'm just wondering about my dosage and duration of the flagyl antibiotic. Is this normal dose/ duration? I'm finding I don't feel so great and it's only day 3. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Flagyl is not a common choice for prostatitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

chronic prostatitis requires long treatment (at least 6 weeks) with proper antibiotics. Flagyl is not a common choice but if your doctor had an antibiogram showing pathogen susceptibility to it, then I can only say that this antibiotic does enter the prostatic tissue in adequate concentrations, so it is supposed to work!

It is usually given three times per day (500mg each dose).

Kind Regards!

i found that Norofloxcin was well tolerated but the flagyl is making me feel off. Also I find myself having more frequent bowel movements than normal like 3-4 per day compared to my 1 or tops 2 per day. Is this normal with Flagyl? He has no proof I even need it but trying it since I still have minor signs of infection still in my prostate fluid. Thanks again

Brief Answer:
These are side-effects probably

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

flagyl is not an easy drug to use. It may cause various side-effects. The ones you've mentioned can be likely attributed to it, if they coincided with its use that is after you've started it. Flagyl may cause diarrhea (increased bowel movements), nausea, weakness, anorexia, taste disturbances and a lot more other side-effects.

I can't comment on your doctor's decision obviously. Your doctor has all the data, has examined you and has seen your tests. But I can confirm that flagyl may cause the symptoms you have right now.

I hope I've helped!

Thanks for your answers. Just one other questio about flagyl. Does flagyl cover the same bacteria as doxycycline? Could this be used instead of flagyl? Thanks

Brief Answer:
No, they are different drugs

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

doxycylcine is a broad spectrum antibiotic. Metronidazole (Flagyl) is good against anaerobic pathogens. They can't be used interchangeably.

Kind Regards!
