What Causes Chronic Gastritis When Diagnosed With Hiatal Hernia?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Feb 2017
Question: My symptom is: squeezing pain in chest, with pain radiating up either side of my neck. I had a stress test two years ago which was negative, went to Gastro doctor, he did an EGD - shows I have gastritis, hiatal hernia, and he prescribed Pantaprozole 40 mg which I take daily. I still have episodes with this pain. It did subside - it was waking me up at night. This fall the gastro doctor did an ultrasound on abdomen - didn't show anything. I had an episode this past Monday evening as I was leaving work, I waiting for it to subside. My gastro doctor said I should return to the cardiologist or go to ER.

Brief Answer:
Some cardiac tests

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for your question and welcome to HealthcareMagic. I understand your concern.

Well the hiatal hernia produces chronic gastritis, and this is always correlating with possible heart problems.

Therefore, in every individual with these diagnoses, this is always good news and bad news at the same time. It is good news because it is the stomach and it is not the heart. The bad news is that we have to examine the heart because we have to be sure it is merely the stomach mucosa causing this pain, and not the heart.

As a start, a negative cardiac stress test two years ago, is a positive indicator. However, if you would have been my patient, I would order few tests:

- an EKG - to assess the heart's conductuion and eletrical systems in resting state
- an Echo cardiogram - to evaluate the heart structures by means of structural integrity, motility and function
- another Cardiac Stress test - to evaluate the heart function and performance in exerting state.

I hope I was helpful with my answer. I am happy to help, if you have follow-up questions.

Kind regards,
Dr. Meriton
