Question: I have small 4cm sliding hiatal hernia - no treatment, also moderate colitis finished tapering down prednisone 8 weeks 40mg to, 35mg 7th week and so on until 5mg on the last week. did not take alcohol for 6 months as chest sore for a day afterwards when last tried alcohol at a wedding, don't smoke, i'm 38. Gastroentorologist said ok to take alcohol while on prednisone, decided not to, finished course, drank 4 bottles of beer 4 days after medication finished and smoked 2 cigarettes, don't smoke normally, only a few when alcohol taken. Next morning woke up to get water from side of bed, chest felt like something in centre of chest briefly fell downwards and immediately went the opposite way back up with a rush feeling going up the neck and splitsecond nausea feeling also. Feel back asleep and for most of rest of the day centre of chest felt sore under sternum and to the sides also. Same pain intensified when breathed in and also when leaned forward also felt like my heart fell forward onto back of ribcage which gave the same intensified sore feeling. The following day not much of this but some and the third day not felt at all. Sounds like alcohol or smoking aggravating something but worried about the sensation happening again if i try alcohol again, easy thing to do would stop it but would like to know why it happens if at all possible. Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
The alcohol caused a lot of gas and the smoking caused acidity.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, welcome to HCM,

The alcohol caused a lot of gas and the smoking caused acidity.

This caused your bloated highly acidic stomach to prolapse through your hiatus hernia into your chest--triggering your symptoms.

Later the upper part of the stomach came back into the abdomen, but the acid had hurt your food pipe leaving a sore feeling.

Yes, alcohol especially beer can trigger an attack again and obviously smoking is bad for the stomach.
