What Causes Chalky And Gritty Feeling On The Tongue?
About a year ago I have noticed that I have a constant chalky and slightly gritty feeling on my tongue. I also sometimes feel my tongue really rough. Other times I feel like grains of sand in the edge of my tongue. I’m 22 years old and I drink around 2 liters of water a day.
Thank you,
XXXX
Continue drinking plenty of fluids. Recommended next steps and advises.

Hello,
Thank you for using HCM to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.
-- You are too young to have a cancer in the tongue, so I am not very much concerned about it, but it is still something to rule out. Have a look at it, see if you have any wounds, or lesions. Send me a picture if that is the case.
-- Also, one other thing we need to rule out, are the problems of the glands that produce the saliva. Maybe consider an ultrasound of the neck to check for blockage of the ways of these glands, for enlargement or any other problem with them.
-- Sometimes problems with the teeth may cause problems in the tongue. So make sure you see a dentist and that your teeth don't have problems.
-- I would encourage you to continue to drink plenty of water.
-- Avoid smoking or chewing tobacco.
-- Avoid spicy foods that may damage the papillae of the tongue. Also strong toothpastes or brushes, should be avoided.
There are my thoughts. If worse or not better, I would recommend seeing a local doctor so they can examine and notice other things that I cannot tell from here.
Hope this is helpful.

I have an other question, Don't you think that this sensation in my tongue can be caused by acid reflux? . The other day, I didn't have any symptoms in my tongue, but then I started feeling this acid reflux coming from my stomach and then my palate got really dry and my tongue got this weird rough texture. I don't know if this is related but its something I've been thinking lately.
Thank you,

Reflux can surely be the cause
Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thank you for the follow up question.
You know yourself better then me, because I have only the information you gave me.
Definitely the acid reflux can cause changes in the tongue. Of course, it is not the primary symptom because it first appears with burning sensation, you feel the acid fluid in the mouth, sometimes cough because a part of the fluid passes in the lungs. If you have any of these symptoms, then definitely it can cause that feeling in the tongue.
You can try treating the reflux for some time and see if that feeling in the tongue goes away. What it is recommended for the reflux it it Omerpazole 20 mg, or Lansoprazole 15 mg, or Pantoprazole 40mg...one of them in the morning, 20 min before food.
Hope this is helpful.
But of course feel free to write back if you have further questions or concerns regarding this issue.
Take care,
