What Causes Burning And Itching Sensation On Feet?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Jul 2014
Question: Why do my feet feel like they are on fire after I take a warm bath or after I swim? They have a deep burning/itching internal sensation that can take hours to go away. It's incredibly uncomfortable. I have perfect feet- no cuts/cracks/callouses etc. so I don't know why this happens.

Brief Answer:
Looks like peripheral neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Your symptoms are simulating peripheral neuropathy. People typically describe the pain of peripheral neuropathy as tingling or burning, and even loss of sensation .Peripheral neuropathy is caused by nerve damage. It can result from such problems as traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic problems, medications and exposure to toxins.Diabetes , thyroid insufficiency and B12 deficiency are important causes in young adults.

In many cases, peripheral neuropathy symptoms improve with time - especially if it's caused by an underlying condition that can be treated.

I think you should consider seeing a doctor who on clinical examination can confirm the diagnosis. The doctor may want you to do tests like blood sugar levels, thyroid function tests, liver/kidney function tests. A nerve conduction study can also be of great help. Treatment is usually directed towards the likely cause.

Could this also cause my feet to be cold all of the time, even when I am otherwise comfortable?

Brief Answer:
Yes, it can make feet go numb and cold.

Detailed Answer:
Loss of sensation , numbness and cold feets can be the symptoms. Also if its going cold with bluish discoloration than possibility of reduced blood supply also needs to be considered, but this does not present with burning sensation, so I have not mentioned it in initial answer.Regards.
