What Causes Bulging Of The Veins After An Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury?

Question: I tore my ACL about three years ago. was doing a lot of biking afterwards and one day while I was pushing hard on the bike my calf felt like it would explode. I stopped but noticed the vein that runs down the side of my leg and over the top of my foot was bulging out like crazy. it's been six months and it's never stopped bulging and has a burning sensation almost like liquid is draining down to my foot. I had a sonogram? where they looked at the vein for a clot and said it looked normal but every day it's really bothering me any ideas?

Brief Answer:
It seems to be a case of varicose vein

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have carefully gone through the details and have considered the case. It seems that the bulging of the viens is due to a condition called varicose veins. It occurs due to incompetence of the valves of the leg veins. As the calf muscles pump the blood back to the heart, the valves prevent backflow. But in case these valves become leaky, the veins gets swollen due to the backpressure and the calf muscles get overworked and stressed thus leading to the pain. If that is the case, it is unlikely to be related to the ACL tear that you suffered earlier.

It however needs clinical examination and correlation to be able to confirm the diagnosis.

Hope that helps.
