What Causes Blood In Urine After Prostate Biopsy?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Jul 2015
Question: I had a prostate biopsy (needles inserted between testicles and anus under general anaesthetic), six days ago. I have had some blood on my urine since but this evening I felt some sensitivity of the skin on my scrotum. I looked at my testicles and noticed they are a purple/red/ brown colour as if blood is spreading into the skin of the scrotum. It looks worrying and has just started today.
Do you know why this has happened, I am very concerned?

Brief answer
There is nothing to worry.

Detailed answer
Hello,
Thanks for the query.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

These are part of after-effects of prostate biopsy.
The most common side effect is bleeding from urethra or some infection or bleeding from rectum. Sometimes there is a leakage of small blood while passing prostate needle. This blood percolates and shows below the skin imparting a purple colour and some  local sensitivity. This is all old blood and not any fresh or persistent bleeding.

Since already six days have passed after your prostate biopsy and there is no pain, fever, bleeding in these past six days. It means every thing is all right and this coloration would go away gradually.

Chances of such type of bleeding increases if person is on some anti coagulants or blood thinners before the surgery.( although those medications must have been stopped before the procedure, if you are taking any of them )

You can relax now as there is nothing to worry, however you must consult your urologist as it would settle your anxiety and any apprehension on this issue.

I hope it helps, however you are most welcome to revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
