What Causes Blood In Stool, Back Pain And Fever After A Biopsy?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Sep 2017
Question: Hi I had a colonoscopy done yesterday and my doctor said everything looked normal but took two biopsies. I felt completely fine yesterday after the procedure except for some gas which I expected. But today I had blood in my stool and ever since my bowel movement I have back pain and my abdomen is extremely tender. And I think I might have a slight fever. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Brief Answer:
Fever is suggestive of infection at the site of the biopsy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.

I've gone through your details and I appreciate your concerns.

When we do biopsy a part of the large intestine is cut and is taken out. In most of the cases, the area taken out heals itself in few days. However, in few cases, this area gets infected which lead to bleeding, fever etc.

Fever is suggestive of infection in the body.

Advice:
Take a broad spectrum antibiotic for few days.
Cefixime 200 mg twice daily would be good for you(you would be needing a prescription from your local physician).

Please get a blood test done to rule out the cause of infection.
Total and differential leucocyte count should be done.
For suppressing inflammation and tenderness you can take Tylenol twice daily.

Let me know if I can assist you further
Thanks!
