Question: Hey doctor,

I'm currently recovering from a cold and I think I have just developed laryngitis. My voice sounds like a horse and its hard to talk. How long does it usually last it days up to 2 weeks online but could it be less than that in some cases? What are the best things to do for treatment?
I also have betadine throat gargle would that be good to use as well for it?

Kind Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
it does sound like laryngitis..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX Welcome back,

I've gone through the query in details, and yes, it does sound like laryngitis from your description..

Well, if necessary treatment initiated without any delay, then it does get subsided within a week only, however even though the symptomatic improvement noted, still the complete course of medications should be continued further (specially the antibiotic up to 10-14 days)..

I advice my patients to be on Tab AZITHROMYCIN 500mg Once daily (with or after food ) for next 10 days (it's the antibiotic, prescription drug only, so please obtain it from the local physician)..

Good that your having Betadine throat gurgle, yes, additionally start it.. Betadine gurgle three times daily for next 7 days.. also put a pinch of salt in XXXXXXX warm water and gurgle twice daily as an alternative fashion for next few days..

For the pain, continue the pain-killers and analgesics as I've already explained earlier..

Cap PANTOPRAZOLE 40mg Once Daily in empty stomach (15-20 min before breakfast) for next 10 days to prevent any drug induced / underlying acidity..

Steam inhalation three times daily (make sure to cover the head properly with a towel for 2-3 mins while doing this)..

Avoid cold drinks, dairy products, sour foods for the time being..also avoid any form of smoking (if at all you do)..

Make sure to remain well hydrated, drink plenty of water (~ 2.5 ltr per day) and XXXXXXX warm liquids (eg. herbal/green tea, soups, broths, porridge etc.).. avoid spicy foods and have simple home cooked meals for the time being..

With all these followed, you should be fine within few days only, however if at all observed any further worsening of the symptoms, recurrence of fever, then I'd strongly suggest to get clinically evaluated by any ENT specialist or to any nearby healthcare facility..

Do let me know how you stay in the due course..

Take Care
Kind Regards

Another thing as well I did have bad ear pains for teo days as well which seems to have disappeared all of sudden. Also I have been taking Vitiam C+Zinc tables every day twice daily it does say three times daily but i'm unsure if that is safe with the ingredients listed which would total 1500mg of Vitiam C. I will attach a picture of it's contents as well. Also would ice cream be ok to have or would ot be worth avoiding?

Brief Answer:
follow as already advised..

Detailed Answer:

Dear XXXXXXX Thanks for following up,

Yes, I've checked the attached picture of the constituents, and let me inform you that your right, even in my opinion, twice daily dosage is just fine..so no problem continuing it twice daily..

Yes, like I've explained before, there's infection mostly bacterial, for which you need proper antibiotic therapy (as I've already explained in details in the previous reply), please get them prescribed and start the treatment soon for a quick recovery..

No XXXXXXX Ice-cream is not at all permissible for now, in fact you should be having plenty of warm liquids (eg. herbal/green tea, soups, broths, porridge etc.) as I've already mentioned before., it's just a matter of few days only, just refrain from it for the time being, once the infection gets cured, you can start having it after obtaining the fitness from your doctor..

Take Care
Kind Regards
