What Causes Abdominal Distension When Suffering From Sjogrens Syndrome?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 May 2014
Question: I have secondary sjogrens syndrome, it has affected my kidney function, I have cirrhosis of the liver, nerve damage in my hands & feet, I had a stroke because of the blood vessels rupturing in my brain & after my surgery my neurosurgeon told my husband that my brain looked like that of an 80 year old person & I'm only 44...
My issue aside from what I'm already dealing with the one thing that is the most miserable is my blow up belly that looks like I swallowed a water, what can I do or take that will reduce my belly back to normal.

My reply is below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms, diagnosis and treatment received so far.

The abdominal distension (swelling) is probably related to cirrhosis of liver and poor kidney function. Both would lead to retention of water, which can cause swelling of belly, and swelling of feet.

In the initial phase, following measures would help reduce the distension of abdomen:

1. Fluid restriction to 1-1.5 liters per day,

2. Use of diuretics such as spironolactone or frusemide, which would lead to loss of extra fluid in the urine,

3. Restriction of salt and protein intake.

These issues can be further discussed with your nephrologist and herpetologist.

For the brain damage and resulting disability, you can start vigorous physiotherapy and exercises.

I am sure you would get better with proper treatment.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
