What Causes A Burning And Itching Sensation Around Left Breast?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Dec 2014
Question: I have been having a burning/itching sensation around left breast and have noticed red streaks at the bottom which i thought were stretch marks from gaining 20 lbs within past 1-1 1/2 years from starting steroid to keep my BP up. I looked at other breast to see if it has stretch marks and it looks like there are a few but nothing compared to the amount i see on left breast. I dont see any major difference in size. I first started noticing the stretch marks a few months ago but they are located on bottom side of breast so they may have been there longer and i just now noticed them. I'm not real sure if they have gotten worse or better since first noticing them. I have freaked myself out by reading about inflammatory breast cancer and Pagets disease. I have no major swelling from what I can tell and the stinging/burning has not got worse in the week but has not gone away either. The burning sensation started for the first time 4 days ago. Should I be concerned? It started the day after my husband sucked on breast... embarrased to admit. I went to GP and she said i do not have an infection and told me to go to my ob/gyn which I see this upcoming week but the waiting is killing me. I was sooo praying for an easy infection but that's not the case. What are your thoughts on this? How can I tell the difference between Ridges associated with Paget disease/IBC vs stretch marks?

Brief Answer:
It may not be paget disease of breast/IBC.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

I can understand your concern, though.

With your description red streaks most probably not due to pagets disease of the breast or IBC.

Stretch marks look like red, silvery marks on the breast and usually occur due to sudden weight changes but in pargets disease, it commonly affects the skin around the nipple and areola.

It is reddish in color, itchy and flaky and usually associated with nipple discharge.

So please consult your gynecologist and get your mammography test done to find out the cause.

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.

Good luck.
