What Ayurvedic Medicines Should I Take To Control Mucus And To Cure Sinus Problem?

default
Posted on Fri, 29 Nov 2013
Question: I have problem of sinus for few years now. Earlier I had mild asthma (since childhood) though it was never severe to affect my lifestyle. My problem is that I suffer from blocked nose and sneezing problem after every 10-15 days. It seems that my face and throat are filled with mucous. To me it also appears as if whatever I eat is converted to mucous most of the times. The allopathic medicines give temporary relief but after 1 or 2 weeks the problem of blocked nose, sneezing, headache appears again. So, what ayurvedic medicines should I try to take for first month to control mucous so as to cure this sinus problem.

Brief Answer: Chronic Allergic Rhinosinusitis Detailed Answer: Dear XXXXX Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health query and following points needs clarifications for Ayurveda line of management 1. going by your history of blocked nose [it seems probably Maxillary sinus is affected], what was the opinion of ENT Specialist?? 2. any associated toothache, headache, eye strain, facial pain and pressure, nasal discharge, poor sense of smell, bad breath.?? 3. since it is coming back thus probably disease has progressed to CHRONIC Rhinosinusitis. [blocked nose, mucus build up] 4. Duration of taking Allopathic Medicine and any addiction? 5. as banana and milk causes you to suffer from cold, sneezing which probably means you are sensitive to the said products which triggers dilation of blood vessels in the nose, and releases chemicals from cells in the nose that cause swelling. [stuffy nose] 6. What about your immune status i.e. getting recurrent fever or any immunocompromised state [any history of diabetes, tuberculosis or kidney disease]?? PS: A poor immune system makes you more prone to any infection. 7. Asthma is a risk factor for sinus infection [as childhood asthma was there] PS: were you examined by a chest specialist for the same [regarding clinical examination and baseline investigations] ?? Thanks Dr. Munish, Below is my reply to the queries : 1. As you judged correctly, I had gone for CTScan which shows signs of maxillary sinus affected. Even nasal polyps were observed. Even it could be mildly observed that inside part of my right nasal passage seems a little swollen. Also, the right nasal part is a little twisted. To recover from sinus, the ENT specialist suggested surgery, according to him, it would give relief for 3-5 years. 2. Headache and Eye strain are there. Toothache sometimes is there as well to the left part where I had gone for root canal treatment 2 years back. 3. Blocked nose and mucus build up is almost always there, for which either I have to take otrivin nasal drops, or other allopathic medicines (nasal spray, or steroidal tables, or sometime anti-allergic tablets like Montek LC). 4. There is no addiction of any sort. I do have to take allopathic medicines almost every alternate week or monthly. Most of the times only one anti allergic tablet of Montek LC gives relief. Then the problem appears again in two weeks and I take tablet again. 5. Yes, banana and milk are something I have tried many times, and everytime I get the cold within 2-3 hours, specially sneezing and some problem in breathing as well. 6. There is no history of diabetes or TB. I had jaundice in my childhood once. Otherwise I don't get fever easily. It occurs like once in a year or two years. 7. I have not been examined by any chest specialist yet. 8. Digestion seems to be a problem. I go to motion 3-4 times a day, specially half an hour after taking meal (except night meal). I do have gastric problem as well, as I keep on burping whole day. Thanks !

Heavy, slimy and acidic food, curd, mustard oil, excess physical exertion, sunlight-dust areas, exposure to strong winds, day sleeping, smoking . Potato, green leafy vegetables. Cold water/food 2.Take: . Vitamin A: helps to maintain Thymus gland which is a powerful antiviral gland: thus mango, carrots, cantaloupe (विलायती खरबूजा), egg yolk, apricots, pumpkin, papaya, are ideal. ii. Vitamin C: is needed for proper functioning of immune system: amla (आमला) is best iii. Vitamin E: is a powerful anti oxidant which helps to stimulate antibody production: peanuts, dried apricots, cooked spinach (शलगम) taro root (अरबी) can be taken iv. Vitamin B is important for the activity of phagocytes: eggs, cheese, pistachio, raw garlic, sunflower and sesame oil. 8.Regarding your Belching/burping problem i.Avoid swallowing of air e.g. sipping tea, chewing tobacco, chewing gum, aerated drinks. ii.Eat slowly, avoid haste, chew properly and avoid overeating. iii.Close the mouth while belching. iv.Avoid oily food and onions, peas, beans, Dals v.Eating a less, than demanded by appetite is very important vi.Drink 4 spoons of aegle marmelos leaves juice for 1 4days vii.Take kaumarya assav or abhya arishta along with tablet Gasex PS Since knowing our limitations, your ENT Doctor is in better position for further prognosis, but Preventive and Prophylactic treatment and Management has been provided Dr. Munish Sood Naimittika

Dr. Munish, First of all, thanks for the detailed information you have provided. This is going to be extremely helpful to me for sure. I would just ask few doubts here to be sure I understand it correctly. 1. Consuming milk generally creates problem for me as I develop cold. As you suggested cow's milk, I assume it would not create problem of cold, but will help build immune system more strong to fight. For same purpose, I guess ghee from cow's milk would help as well. Should I avoid paneer, cheese and butter ? Normally I prefer mayonnaise instead of cheese, thinking that cheese would create cold problem. 2. What could be taken in non-veg ? I normally take egg (egg white and yolk) and chicken more often. 3. My normal diet consists of rotis/parathas (of wheat flour) in breakfast and lunch, and white rice (in dinner). Should I stop taking white rice ? 4. I see that green leafy vegetables are suggested not to be taken. Does that include spinach, cabbage etc ? I normally take vegetable soup in evening everyday which contains spinach, cabbage, carrot, tomatoes, beetroot etc. Otherwise also I take spinach very often, I thought it helps building immune system. 5. I do nasya karma for 2-3 days every two months, to get rid of mucus from face and throat. Most of the times it works, though sometimes it makes cold more severe when I need to first wait to get rid of cold first to start nasya again. 6. Most important part : I am going to follow your prescription at the earliest. I hope the medicines you suggested would take care of the digestion problem as well, so that mucus secretion becomes lesser with time. The other prescription I received sometime back was like this : 1. Somasav 10 ml thrice a day with water 2. Vyosadi vati 2 tabs twice a day 3. Naradiya XXXXXXX XXXXXXX ras 1 tab thrice a day 4. Syrup Septilin or bresol syrup 3 ml thrice a day 5. Pathyadi ghan vati 2 tabs twice a dayday Would need to have your advice on this as well. Thanks for taking time to give such a detailed answer which elaborates even the smallest parts of caution and suggestions. I really appreciate this. Thanks for that. ENT's suggestion of surgery also seems to have temporary result of few years, hence I prefer to go with Ayurveda to get rid of this problem permanently.

Brief Answer: Characteristics of Diet Detailed Answer: Dear XXXXX Thanks for reverting back with your concerns 1.Since you commonly get cold while consuming grocery Milk, make sure if you do get the same with cow’s milk it will be better to avoid the same [reason being cow’s milk is BABY food for calves and not for adults]. But since Ayurveda medicine considers cow’s milk it to be a strengthening, nutritive driver for medicines [Anupana] thus do not take it individually but as a vehicle for administration of drugs in prescription 3 and 4 [ii].. Since it causes increase in number of CD4 helper cells b.Mayonnaise [since is processed] is an offending agent of sinus problem and so is cheese, Avoid them 2.Chicken noodle soup 3. Since white rice has lots of white liquid (पिच्छ), i.e. the discarded liquid which makes it more mucus forming agent. [Brown rice [that too 1 year old] will have very less forming of liquid portion making it more favorable for your ailment. 4.All of the said vegetables are good Immune boosters but don’t take them in lunch but instead drinking liquid-based hot vegetables in form of soup will help thin mucus and promote nasal drainage, helping the sinuses restore to their normal state Do not consume any beverages containing caffeine because these beverages can lead to dehydration and increased nasal congestion. 5.Nasya [pratimarsh] can be followed daily without any complications after consulting an Ayurveda physician there and can ask how to perform Jal Neti/ Rubber Neti also. 6. i. Nardiya XXXXXXX XXXXXXX ras is prescribed for diseases above the Neck [and nose is one such organ] so is effective [make sure you take it either with tambul svaras, honey or milk] ii. Vyosadi vati again is drug of choice in pratishyaya [make sure you take it with hot water] iii. Syrup Septilin is having Immunomodulators while Bresol is for Rhinitis [again good] iv. Somasav having broncho dilator properties is effective in Asthma and bronchitis. v. pathya ghan vati is for indigestion and general weakness of body Dr. Munish Sood Naimittika
