Posted on Fri, 3 Jun 2016
Question: Last month, My 4y 4m only son bitten by a stray dog (female) on his hips around 1.30 pm. He is wearing two pants. He got two wounds. Small on upper part and severe on bottom part with blood spot on pant. Cleaning not done properly, only savlon used. Took him to govt hospital emergency, Dr categories it cat-II, but it was cat-III. RABIPUR given on 0, 3, 7 day. 7th day I came to know that the dog died two days before, people confirm about his madness also. 8th day, I went to a private clinic, Dr also confirm it cat 3 case and advice to have Berirab P inj around his wound, though it is late and complete Rebipur doses for 14th and 28th day. Rabipur course is over. My son is fine. Sir, me and my wife are in great stress, no positive sign seen, please help me to come out from this situation. Thanks. XXXXX

Brief Answer:
No need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Healthcaremagic.

I have gone very carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Let me state bluntly that had your child been affected by rabies, he would probably be dead by now as rabies is a lethal disease. The very fact that he is doing fine till date is enough to reassure you that he is not affected and you need not get unnecessarily stressed. The course of vaccination has already been completed and you may relax.

Let me know if I could help further.

Brief Answer:
Immunity takes time to grow

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Let me correct your understanding. Had rabies actually been transmitted to your child, nothing other than antirabies serum could save him. That he is alive therefore indicates that transmission had not occurred. As such five rabipur does have helped him grow an immunity of equivalent amount but that has taken time. Had he been affected actually, he would not have got over this time delay.
