What Are The Symptoms Of Hepatitis?

default
Posted on Mon, 18 May 2015
Question: Hi, I am a 34 year old male and do a good level of physical activity each week. i have a healthy weight. i have a total bilirubin level of 1.4mg/dL (indirect bilirubin is 1.09; direct bilirubin is 0.31) and have an ALT SGPT of 54 IU/L. My total serum protein, albumin, globulin etc. are in the normal range. My AST SGOT is also in the normal range - 31 IU/L. My LDH is normal - 176 IU/L. Cholesterol, blood sugar etc are normal too. I am slightly Vitamin D deficient (25ng/mL). Are my Bilirubin and ALT SGPT a cause for concern? What do you think is going on w.r.t. my liver? Should i stay away from alcohol completely (i do not drink much to begin with)?
Thanks alot.

Brief Answer:
Not much to worry; but avoid alcohol

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome to HCM.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I understand your concern.
First of all, the mild increase that you have had in your bilirubin and sgpt levels does not look much alarming. You might have had a mild case of hepatitis and hence the increase. Still the levels are not high enough to stamp a diagnosis. Also, mild increase in sgpt levels are quite common and not to be worried for. Your vitD3 level is somewhat decreased. I would suggest you the following-

Modify diet. Take small frequent meals, more fruits and vegetables, less fat.
Exercise regularly.
Avoid alcohol and smoking.
You can take tab ursodeoxycolic acid 150mg once daily for a month.
Take vitD3 60k softules once weekly for 2months.
Get a repeat LFT, vitD3 assay and ultrasonography whole abdomen after 2 months.
You can consult your doctor for prescription of the above.

Hope this was useful.

Regards.
