default
Posted on Fri, 12 Dec 2014
Question: I believe my husband is bi polar and is currently on medication for depression. However he hs severe highs where he buys all and everything he sees advertised and thinks he is far superior to anyone else. Then he has down moods where everyone is against him. How do I convince him to seek help? My friends all agree he has typical bi polar symptoms. He drinks heavily at times and has knocked me about but does not remember next day.

Brief Answer:
It is very difficult to convince

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for your query. Welcome to HCM.

As per your decription it does seem that he has some mood disorder that is of bipolar type. The diagnosis should be confirmed by visiting a psychaitrist.

The intakr of alcohol is also complicating the picture. Does he take alchol daily? In which amount? For how long has he been taking?

That is common for patient of bipolar that they deny illness and does not seek professional help becaise they do not feel that they have any illness. This is the characteristic of the illness.

If illness is severe then he must be forcefully taken to pstchiatrist with admitted to psychaitric nursing home, where he will be under supervision of doctors and his alcohol addiction will also be taken care of.

For sedating him, drugs can be given but fist of all you must have consulted a psychiatrist. First visit a psychiatrist and ask for help, do not take him with you, just go for consultation and discuss the case. He will give you necessary information and also will suggest that what can be done and how?. It is difficult situation but you have do this for his interest even if he doesn't want this.

Hope i have answered your query. If you have further query then feel free to ask. Wish you good luck.
