Question: Hello Doctor XXXXXXX

My name is XXXXX residing in XXXXXXX XXXXXXX My daughter (10 years old) has Uveitis problem. We have referred to XXXXXXX netralaya which is a premier eye hospital in XXXXXXX Doctors had prescribed Pred forte eye drops to dilute the eye infection and after completing the course, she is still having mild infection. Doctor has prescribed Oral Steroids Prednisone along with Shelcal and Rantinide to continue for 1 month and if the infection is still not reduced, he would be prescribing Methotrexate.

I would like to know from you if we go with the Doctors medication, Is there any long term side effects to my daughter. Request your advice.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Uveitis is a serious condition that calls for urgent medical management. Whenever we treat some medical condition, it is done when the potential rewards outweigh the risks. In this case the risk of leaving the condition untreated would inevitably lead to loss if vision in the affected eye, a risk which cannot be afforded. Hence, the treatment with steroids is essential. It is just an incidental issue that I am not expecting any long term hazard of the treatment if tapered off properly.

The mentioned treatment is correct and should be continued.

Brief Answer:
In resistant cases

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Yes, methotrexate might need to be given in resistant cases. It may have adverse effects on a growing child, but as I mentioned, medicines are given when rewards outweigh the risks. Please note, it is due to inflammation and not infection.
