What Are The Side Effects Of Levofloxacin?

default
Posted on Fri, 18 Nov 2016
Question: My doctor has prescribed levofloxacin for me today. I read about its side effects and they scare me. The purpose of the drug is to treat sores around my anus, one of which is torn. That one is about 2 inches away from the anus. The Doctor did not think that it had penetrated into the blood stream Is there a different antibiotic that can do the same job without such dangerous side effects? I am age 82 and also suffer from very low red blood cell count and very low white blood cell count.I would like to add some information from my recent medical history. On 10/3/2016, I went to the emergency room of Hoag XXXXXXX Hospital for a sore at a different location around my anus (on the advice of a different GP). The emergency room doctor diagnosed it as decubitus and prescribed Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim oral tablet 800-160 mg., which I took for 14 days and the decubitus markedly improved. I would also like to add that I started to use male guards several months ago because I usually leak immediately after urinating. I changed the male guards about once per day, so my genitals were in contact with wet guards much of the time.

Brief Answer:
No worries, adapted drug, watch and report if side effect

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,

I understand this could be scary, especially taking a drug as such for the first time with many described side effects.

The description of why your doctor prescribed this drug for makes me think the drug is appropriate. As of the imidazole family, it is a broad spectrum antibiotic and adapted to treat especially atypical and anaerobic bacteria that generally cause infection around the anal area.

Many side effects, scary. It's but normal. This drug is not as toxic as you might think. I suggest you eat well and drink much water as you take the medication. The essence of being aware of side effects is to reduce your anxiety in case you experience a side effect.

I think it is an adapted drug and no real need to bother that much.

kind regards as I wish you the best of health.
