Posted on Mon, 14 Dec 2015
Question: This past week I underwent a heart catherization in which they found some blockages. I was prescribed 4 medications (Low Dose aspirin, Plavix, Lipitor and Toprol). My question is what affect is extended use of
these drugs going to have on other organs such as Liver and Kidneys. I have no other physical issues
and my cholesterol is within normal limits. The doctors cannot find any reason for why these blockages
occurred except maybe heredity.

Brief Answer:
There is a small possibility of side effects

Detailed Answer:
Dear Mrs,

Any medication has small possibility of causing adverse events, such as liver or kidney dysfunction etc. Also Aspirin and Plavix can cause bleeding complications.
When we prescribe a medication, we compare the possibility of having side effects vs favorable effects, which we expect from that particular medication. And usually we prescribe a medication when favorable effect is much more bigger that possibility of adverse effects.
There are many patients who take the medications for years and have no side effects. So, don't worry. Take your medications, follow healthy lifestyle, and go for regular check-ups, and every thing will be OK.

Hope I could help you

Wishing you a good health

Since my cholesterol is normal (<129 I'm at 107) and I am not overweight, no diabetes, no high blood pressure and no previous heart attack, and I don't drink or smoke (never have), I am wondering how much effect would too much sodium have in causing heart issues. In May of this year, mine was 140 out of a range of 135-144.

Brief Answer:
Welcome back

Detailed Answer:
Dear Mrs,

Use of excessive amount of sodium is a risk factor arterial hypertension, but it can be a risk factor for coronary artery disease as well. If you have normal kidney function your blood sodium levels will remain normal even if you use too much sodium.
In your case heredity and stress may have role as well.

Take care
