What Are The Risks Of HIV Transmission Through Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Tue, 8 Nov 2016
Question: Dear Sir or Madam,

I performed unprotected oral sex on a women (unknown health status) followed by protected vaginal sex. I have no cuts, sore throat or any of the kind and the women was not on her period either.
After reading through Healthcare websites / forums, I became to realize about the low risk factor of transmitting HIV via Oral sex on a women. Unfortunately the level of scientific evidence is a bit blurry in most responses.
Thus my question: Is there a real risk of being infected if no cuts / dental work / soar throat / women’s period (blood) was in place?
Does is make a difference if the women is more or less wet and has therefor produce different amounts or vaginal fluids?
When infected through the women, is HIV actually transmitted through her vaginal fluids or rather her cervical "fluid", which would theoretically make a big difference when thinking about the transmission of HIV through performing oral sex on a women?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Brief Answer:
The risk of Hiv through oral sex is low

Detailed Answer:
Heo. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar, dermatologist.

I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.

Performing oral sex carries a low risk of transmission of Hiv. This risk has not been quantified individually because most individuals who practice oral sex also practice other forms of sexual acts during the same sexual encounter.
The risk through oral sex depends on many variables like presence of another concomitant STD like herpes, syphilis etc which increase the risk of transmission of Hiv. Duration is important because longer the oral sex lasts more is the risk of Hiv infection. Other factors like viral load and whether the person is on ART treatment are also important.
Vaginal fluids are infectious and so are cervical fluids.
