Posted on Tue, 28 Jun 2016
Question: I am infected with HSV 1. No sores or blisters present. My partner is infected with HSV 2 she experienced sores and blisters in her genitals. What are the risks with kissing?

I am infected with HSV ! and my partner is infected with HSV 2. Since we are both infected what are the risks of oral sex for either one of us. Any signs of sores or blisters understandably rule out any physical engagement.

Brief Answer:
Oral sex can transmit HISV 1 infection to genitals during viral shedding

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.
HSV 1 infection is not sexually transmitted disease. But it can be transmitted through kissing. HSV 2 is a STD, but unlikely to be transmitted to other parts of boy other than ano-genital area.
Moreover both the infection are infectious only during the manifestations or during viral shedding before and after manifestation. Other times the transmission is unlikely. But we can not pinpoint the viral shedding period.
HSV 1 infection is so common among any population. Presence of antibodies in blood does not indicate that it is active. Just indicates an old infection.
Infection through Oral sex can not be ruled out.

Can a male with HSV 1 trigger HSV 2 in a woman's genitals performing oral sex? ALSO. "Viral shedding" means visible blisters and sores in the genitals or around the mouth's lips or inside the mouth. Yes?

Brief Answer:
HSV 1 infected person can not trigger HSV 2 in the partner through oral sex

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

There is nothing like that a male with HSV 1 trigger HSV 2 over woman's genitals. But oral sex can infect the woman's genitals with HSV 1 infection if the male partner has the HSV 1 infection if there is manifestation or viral shedding. But this is not mandatory always. The partner can escape from an infection also.

Viral shedding (invisible) can occur with the lesions and also in absence of lesions prior or after the episode.

So, if you are HSV 1 infected you should not be kissing anyone!

Brief Answer:
Avoid kissing with the lesion of Herpes around mouth.

Detailed Answer:
HI,
Welcome back.
Avoid kissing when you are having any lesions in around the mouth and nose and also during prodromal syndrome (tingling, pain or insect-crawling sensation) before the appearance of any episode. There is no way to assess exactly the viral shedding. Kissing can not be avoided for ever.
