default
Posted on Sat, 6 Sep 2014
Question: Can you please share with me the chances of getting syphylis from giving a girl unprotected oral? I do not know if she is infected but let's assume worse case scenario that she is. Also how soon can i get a test? The SF city clinic and other risk charts really just show herpes as risk from giving a girl oral. Thanks for your help

Brief Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCm

Detailed Answer:
There is a risk for such transmission of syphilis but this is minor and considered to be about 1 per 1000 exposures if other person is syphilis positive. Risk is much lower comparing to vaginal sex. This risk is higher if there is open wounds or ulcer in mouth. But all on all, since syphilis is rarity today, you dont have to be worried. Test should be done 2-3 weeks after intercourse. Wish you good health. Regards

Thanks. I also had protected vagina sex with this girl who ended up being a prostitute. The condom did not break and was used the whole time. Again I do not know her status and am freaking out I have HIV. Sick to my stomach about it. I am going in for HIV RNA test which I read is conclusive at 9 days. I will go in at 10 days. What do you think the chances of me having HIV are and how accurate are these HIV RNA test?

Brief Answer:
hi

Detailed Answer:
HIV RNa test is the mos accurate one and its accuracy is around 99% so if this is performed 10 days after possible exposure,it will practically rule out HIV transmission. You are vat very low risk for HIV transmission considering your story nad it is around 1/20000 if condom was used properly. Of course, first of all, this person had to be HIV positiv. I know that HIV sounds serious at this point for you. But dont be concerned, chances are really negligible.

Thank you! One more question. I read that the HIV RNA test produce a fair amount of false positives. Do you have any insight you can share with how frequently a false positive happens? Also with my experience I described and if/when I receive the negative HIV RNA test would that be conclusive? I read that these test can be considered conclusive at 9 days. Thanks again

Brief Answer:
hi

Detailed Answer:
No, this test has high sensitivity and high specifity and false positive as well as false negative results are rarity. This is seen in 1 per 200-250 cases. But if you repeat test after 3-4 weeks than chances of false results are extremely minor. So after 10 days it will be conclusive and this small percent of false results shouldnt worry you.
