What Are The Chances Of Pregnancy After Withdrawal Bleeding?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Apr 2015
Question: Hi Doctor,

I had unprotected sex twice on 27thFeb, post which I took an Ipill. My last period was on 15th Feb. After 7 days I had what seemed like withdrawal bleeding for 4 days ( i didn't have any cramps like how I usually do). I did a pregnancy test on 19th March, the result was negative. I have not had my periods yet.

1. Is it possible to be pregnant even after getting the withdrawal bleeding?
2. Should I be taking another home pregnancy test?
3. When can I expect normal periods?

Brief Answer:
chance of pregnancy is rare

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to healthcare magic. I understand your concern.

In my opinion there might be no chance of pregnancy after withdrawal bleeding unless you had an unprotected intercourse after the bleeding. I-pill is 95% effective as you have taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. The pregnancy chances are very less in your case.

Infact the withdrawal bleeding might be the period only. I-pill has high dose of progesterone. This causes hormonal imbalance leading to early period or delayed period. So you might got the period early. I-pill also effects the amount of bleeding that it might be lighter or heavier.

Sometimes the irregular periods may present till 3 months.

So dont worry. You might not need to repeat the test. Check for your next period in April corresponding from the date of withdrawal bleeding (as it might be the period mostly).

Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss furthur.

Brief Answer:
period confirms that pill is effective

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,I got your query.I understand your concern.
In my opinion ipill is an emergency contraceptive which works in 3 ways like:-
1)it prevents ovulation.
2)it makes cervical mucus think and prevents sperm ascent.
3)it alters the endometrium and make it unfit for implantation.
So depending on the period of intake of cycle it acts to prevent the pregnancy.
If taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex it is 95% effective. So you need not worry.
Ipill due to its high progesterone dose causes hormonal imbalance and causes the cycle irregular. The withdrawal bleeding is called period.
And yes the appearance of period indicates that ipill has worked. So relax you might be safe.
I suggest you to practice safe sex with condom and use ipill to only emergency situations if necessary.Because repeated usage of ipill might cause irregular and heavy bleeding.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss furthur.
Best regards...Dr.srilatha
