What Are The Chances Of STD Transmission Through Unprotected Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Oct 2014
Question: Please find below my list.

July 26, 2014 – Only Oral in 69 position with a male, no penetration whatsoever

August 15, 2014 – Only Oral in 69 position with a male, no penetration whatsoever

I tested at a hospital for any problems on September 25, 2014 after 40 days to be exact (almost 6 weeks). My question is, are the results conclusive.

Should i repeat the testing?

the results are -

VDRL - negative, TPHA also negative.

HBsAg - negative

HIV - negative.

Are the results conclusive? Is there anything to worry?

I’m really worried about the Hepatitis B. Was the time period of 40 days after possible infection, conclusive? I am having loose bowels at times.

Brief Answer:
Different infection detected at diff period.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX, I understand your concern. I am Dr. Arun Tank & I am infectious disease specialist. I am going to answer your concern.

- Each test has some limitation. They can detect the disease after some period of time.

- VDRL can be detected after 3 to 4 weeks. Hepatitis B can be detected on an average after 75 days (30 to 80 days). HIV can be detected after 3 months (in 97% cases).

- You have tested yourself after about 40 days (roughly), in this time frame VDRL can give effective result while Hepatitis B and HIV remain inconclusive (only for antigen and antibody testing). You have to test it for second time.

- PCR (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) can detect Hepatitis B and HIV can detect both the disease even before forty days. So if you have gone through this test you need not to test yourself for second time.

- No need to worry for Hepatitis B as it self wont cause you loose bowels.

If you have anything else to ask I will be very happy to answer that. We wish you a best health at healthcare magic.
Thank you,

Dear Sir,

Thank you so much for your time.

I won’t be having HIV. The nature of the sex was only oral.

Thanks to you I can rule out Syphilis also.

My real worry is Hep B. I work in Dubai and testing positive for Hep B is real concern for me.

What are the symptoms for Hep B.

I’m having loose motion and joint pain at times. Sometimes back pain is also there.

When should I start watching out for symptoms for Hep B.?

Also if there is a chance that I contracted Hep B, is there a possibility that I can clear the infection on my own (means my immune system) within January 2016.

Would the testing show negative by then.

After August 15 I have abstained from all sorts of sexual activities and I plan to do that for the next 2 years.

Many thanks,

Also I did HBsAG, the antigen test. Should that give conclusive result within 40 days?

Brief Answer:
Re testing is necessary..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Hepatitis B has following symptoms:-
- Non specific to liver: fever, joint pain, urticaria or maculopapular rashes, malaise, and non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea.
- Specific to liver is Jaundice, it rarely persists for more than 4 weeks and usually, is not severe.
- In many patients there is immune complex formation, which includes, glomerulonephritis, polyarteritis, peripheral neuropathy etc.
- Some patients become chronic carrier of the disease.

- Incubation period for hepatitis B infection ranges from 40-160 days, with an average of 60-90 days, so you have to look for symptoms after this period of time.

- Approximately 60 % of the infected population will recover with their own, rest may develop in to active hepatitis, chronic hepatitis and some becomes healthy carrier.

- As you have passed 40 days only it is likely that hepatitis, if present in you might not be detected. So retesting is necessary because you tested by HbsAg test.

- The disease progression depends on how your immune system handles the disease. It may get treated may progress to chronic phase. All you have to do is you have to test yourself periodically.

If you have anything else to ask I will be very happy to answer that. We wish you a best health at healthcare magic.
Thank you,
Dr. Arun Tank
