Question: Hi,
I began feeling ill on July 9th. Symptoms were sore throat and some heart palpitations. My throat became so inflamed I had a hard time swallowing and breathing. I started and finished doxycycline, prednisone, and zyrtec. I'm still not well: sore throat, fatigue, fast heart rate (102). The following are the only abnormal blood results from two days ago. I see my doctor today. I want to know what I should be asking them.
WBC: 14.3
Neutro Abs 11.4
Mono Abs 1.0
Chloride 109
BUN 23
BUN/Creatinine 24.1
IG Abs: Immature Granulocytic count encompasses metamyelocytes, myleocytes, and promelocytes. Their presence indicates a granulocytic left shift in the blood.

Brief Answer:
indicates a bacterial infection is still present

Detailed Answer:
HI,

Most infections involving sore throat, fever, fatigue are viral but in some cases a bacterial infection can be present.

Granulocytes are a type of white blood cell. Promyelocyte develop into myelocytes which become metamyelocytes, they are immature/young white blood cells. Usually found in the bone marrow where they are found but can be seen in the blood with some infections.

White blood cells respond to infection/inflammation in the body but in general certain white blood cells respond to certain infections eg bacterial vrs viral or parasite etc

Granulocytes indicate that the infection is likely bacterial and though you already had a course of antibiotics, this antibiotic did not seem to treat the infection. The infection seemed to be resistant to this and you would need a different antibiotic course

Rarely the presence of immature/young white blood cells in the blood can mean a serious condition is present but with your history of infection, that (infection) is the most likely cause.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
Thanks.
