Hello,
Thanks for the query.
Brief answer...A better resolution is provided by using contrast medium and hence you get a superior  imaging study.
Detailed answer....
These imaging studies like MRI or CT scans give a very important and valuable informations of the tissues and organs inside your body.
MRI with contrast involves a use of some chemical agent or a tracer agent which helps in enhancing the MRI results.
One of the most important difference between MRI with and without contrast is the level of resolution provided. Some types of tissues or some pathological lesions are best seen with the help of contrast medium. You can actually assess the extent of abnormal tissue or the extent of lesion by using a contrast medium.
Since you already are suffering from brain and spine cancer,it becomes very important to exactly see the extent of problem and also assess the efficacy of treatment.
Your doctor is absolutely right in ordering for both types of MRI.

I hope it helps however you may revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
