Brief Answer:
Adderall should be tapered gradually

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for asking from Health Care Magic

Adderall is amphetamine drug. The drug is one of commonly drug used for recreational purpose. Abrupt stoppage after long term use precipitates withdrawal in form of severely depressed mood, anxiety, tremors, irritability, anger outburst, giddiness, inability of focus etc symptoms. The symptoms usually last for 3-5 weeks.

Best method to prevent withdrawal is gradual tapering of drug.

In normal cases transition depends upon the drugs you were taking whether long acting (XR) or immediate acting (IR) preparations. Transition from XR is a little easier as per my experience.

Start by gradually decreasing the dose of about 20-25% every 2 weeks and then decrease the doses to zero at the end of 6-8 weeks. In this method withdrawal will not be seen. This is what I follow in my clinic, consult your psychiatrist for any detailed prescription.

Thanks, hope this helps you. If you have more questions you can ask again.

Brief Answer:
No specific medicines

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

There are no specific medications that can prevent withdrawal symptoms but a lot of medicines can reduce the anxiety and hyperarousal associated with amphetamines. Medicines like Hydroxyzine (25-50mg) can be used to decrease anxiety. The medicine will help in sleep also. Off label use of Clonidine 0.1 mg has also been found to be effective in reducing withdrawal symptoms. But over best therapy to prevent withdrawal is reducing the doses I have described. Consult your psychiatrist for detailed prescription.

Thanks, hope this helps you
