Brief Answer:
No need to take any contraceptive pill.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Thank you for trusting us with your health concern.

I have gone through your query and understand your problem.

You have mentioned that you were due for your period yesterday and you had unprotected intercourse yesterday, in this case you do not need to take iPill or any other emergency contraceptive pill because you are not going become pregnant provided your periods were regular and you had not used any emergency contraceptive pills last month.

Taking an iPill (an emergency contraceptive pill) will upset the normal ovarian cycle so since you took an iPill last month, we can not be absolutely sure of your ovulation date this month.

iPills are for emergency contraception only and you should avoid them as much as possible.

A better way managing your sexual life without the risk of getting pregnant is to use a regular contraceptive method like condoms and regular oral contraceptive pills.

So in my opinion, you should go ahead and take the iPill this time, but do not take it repeatedly as it will cause your ovarian cycle to go haywire.

Use condoms or take regular contraceptive pills and regularise your periods.

Hope this answers your question, please feel free to write back to me if you have any doubts.

Best regards.

Brief Answer:
At this time, better to take iPill to be safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again Ms XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing back.

Yes, it is better to take iPill now, just to be safe.

Other methods of not getting pregnant are...

1. Use condoms,
2. Take regular oral contraceptive pills, there are various formulations available and they come in fixed dose packaging, what that means is, you have to take one tablet every day, ideally at a particular time each day (if you take it in the morning at 8 am first day, you will have to take it at morning 8 am every day).

Some of these oral contraceptive pills contain both estrogen and progesterone, and some contain only progesterone, and progesterone only pills should be taken every day without fail.

http://www.rmhp.org/docs/default-source/provider/oral_contraceptive_reference_chart.pdf?sfvrsn=7 This link will give you an exhaustive list of all types of pills that can be taken.

Based on your particulars like marital status, breastfeeding status and other social barriers, one may be better suited than the other, so you should visit a local gynecologist for the best choice.

3. Third method would be to combine condom and calendar method, for this you will need to understand the basics of menstrual and ovarian cycles. The ovaries release a fully mature secondary oocyte (egg) on alternate months, this happens under the influence of many hormones (primarily FSH and LH)...

When you have regular periods every month, and if the duration of menstrual cycle (that is, the duration from the first day of your previous menstruation/period/blleding, to the first day of the next period/bleeding), is fixed and is 28 days, then your ovaries will release an egg on 14th day after your period..

This more or less fixed if your menstrual cycles are regular like clockwork.

The important thing to understand here is that, if your periods are irregular, then the egg may get released later than 14 days, so the time of ovulation can change and it makes the calendar method difficult to follow.

By calendar method, I mean, keeping very accurate track of what days you get your periods, and avoiding sex from day 10 to day 18 after your periods.

A combined condom and calendar method is, you use condoms from day 10 to day 18 and on other days you do not use condoms (you can use a female condom as well).

The duration for menstrual bleeding to occur after failure of the egg to get fertilised by sperm and then get implanted, is fixed at 14 days.

There are other contraceptive methods like sterlisation, implantable medicines, copper-T insertion, I think you will be able to understand better if you meet a doctor in person and discuss these methods directly.

I hope, for now, this answers your question.

Take care.
