Posted on Wed, 9 Nov 2016
Question: I have been on abilify 10 mg for 12 years. My psychiatrist suggested I go off it and did a rather quick wean. I have been in withdraw for 10 weeks, have developed tardive diskonesia, and am deathly ill. What can I do? When will this end? I can't work or get through everyday activities because of the nausea, headaches, stiffness, trouble swallowing, many more symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

First of all your doctor doctor is probably right in saying that he never saw such long withdrawal but we need to understand that long withdrawals are possible and do occur. It addition there is rule of thumb to suggest when you will go off these withdrawal symptoms as every person responds differently when it comes to withdrawal symptoms.

In my view it is advisable to go back to low dose of ability for brief period say 4-6 weeks and than taper it slowly as recommended by manufacturer. In addition a trial of benzodiazepines such as clonazepam, lorazepam should be given as I find these medications quite effective in withdrawal symptoms of antipsychotics. I must acknowledge that it is off label use and not recommended by any authority.

I hope this helps you.
If you have more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards.
