Question: My 7 year old granddaughter has had severe itching for a little over a week now. It happens about 3 or 4 times a day and she seems to be going out of her mind when it happens. She scratches so hard that it leaves red whelps and scratches all over her and she jumps around and cries. What are some of the causes of this? I've been called from her school nurse three times because of this. Also if she is doing fine and someone mentions anything related to itching, it starts up again and if she's already itching and it's mentioned, it get's even worse. Do I need to take her to the emergency room?

I feel sorry for the issue your granddaughter has. It can be due to any of the many reason. It can be:
Dry skin (XEROSIS) is very common nowadays in this season.
Hives that are sudden rashes and itching on the skin that drives the person to scratch.
Can be any medication induced skin issue.
Eczema.
Lice, scabies, chickenpox or Psoriasis are some skin issues causing these symptoms.
Contact dermatitis usually caused by irritation or allergy due to anything coming in contact to the skin. The skin is actually allergic to that specific irritant. Wool, chemicals, soaps, perfumes, poison ivy and cosmetics can do this.
Food allergy is also a cause.
Thyroid diseases, liver disease, celiac disease--wheat intolerance and pruritis.
Impetigo is a bacterial infection of skin causing rash and an urge to scratch.
Some blood disorders also cause skin irritations and itching that leads to rashes.

Try to make an appointment with a Dermatologist as soon as possible and if you are unable to get an early appointment, kindly take her to the Emergency Room as this is very important to be seen by a specialist. You are already doing all possible over the counter remedies that are not curing it. It means this is something to be taken care of by a Specialist. He will run a battery of tests on her including the blood work and skin diagnostics. Then after diagnosis he will be able to treat her.
