Posted on Sat, 18 Apr 2015
Question: How do you lose weight gained (12 lbs) when increasing amount of nortriptyline taken. I have gone back to my original amount, 10 mg, from 50 mg. I continue to gain weight! I think it's water retention. I am already 30 lbs overweight. HOW CAN I BRING MY WEIGHT DOWN. NOBODY HERE SEEMS TO KNOW. Should I be taking diuretics? I take many medications.
thank you

Brief Answer:
Diuretics

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern. May i know the indication for nortriptyline?
Have you had a thyroid blood work done?
After certain age, body's metabolism slows down and there is a tendency to gain weight. Reducing simle sugars and carbohydrates together with oderate exercise will help. Dinner should be very early and very light.

Diuretics will only help if you have true water retention. It should be taken only under medical supervision as it has some side effects especially electrolyte imbalance ( Low sodium and potassium)

How do you know if you are retaining water? My stomach is huge..looks like I'm pregnant. Nor. is prescribed for fibromyalgia.I have blood work done every 6 mo for thyroid. I have annual physical. blood work was all normal. That was last month before I started reducing the nortrip.

Nothing changed in my eating habits (apx 1500 calorie) or excercise. The only thing that is different is the nortriptyline increase. I read on line that people can gain weight on nor. because of antihistamine effect on receptors. How long does it take for the brain to get the message that I'm going down on nort.? Have you seen this in your practice?
thanks

I am not eating enough calories to explain a 2 lb weight gain ever week

My tsh on March 10th was 1.05
T3 is 2.3
T4 is 1.38

I think my synthroid should be increased although my doc says "he feels comfortable" at this level.

I always say "treat the patient not the number". I have tried to increase in the past and got insomnia from it so I had to go back to 100mcg synthroid.

Brief Answer:
water retention

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for the reply. I do respect your view that " treat the patient, not the number".
Having said this, your TSH is quite normal and there is no need to increase dose of synthroid.

Nortriptyline and other tricyclic antidepresants can cause weight gain and yes, i have seen this. It might take few weeks to months for the body to reduce weight once dose of nor is reduced.

If you have a pitting edema in ankle area or feet, likely that you have water retention
