Suggest Treatment For Watery Eyes In An Infant
Question: Hello doctor, my baby is 10 days now. I have a question for her . She has some liquid coming from eyes, and like a adult she has this liquid to be concentratred in a corner. It doesnt make in problem. But is it normal to have such things?
Brief Answer:
Could be normal
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
There is a duct called nasolacrimal duct connecting inner side of eye into the nose.
This is required to drain the tear secretions from eye to nose.
In many babies the duct would not open at birth. There is no need to worry as the duct will open in the next few months.
My advice
1. Gentle massage from inner eye along the nose downwards 10 to 20 times every 4 hours will help in opening the duct soon.
2. If there is redness in the eyes or plenty of thick material it could indicate infection which needs clinical confirmation by your pediatrician.
Wishing your baby good health.

Ok thanks sir. What if some swelling in one of the eye.
Brief Answer:
Better to consult your pediatrician or ophthalmologist
Detailed Answer:
If there is swelling it could indicate infection or conjunctivitis.
This needs confirmation by clinical examination and treatment with appropriate antibiotic eye drops like ciprofloxacin which is usually prescribed.
