Brief Answer:
Varicose veins is treated by surgeon after doing venous Doppler scan of leg

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Varicose veins is a common condition seen in people who remain standing for long duration at work. This happens when there is leak in valves of the veins in the legs. The legs have two sets of veins which bring back blood to the heart. They are the superficial system and deep system of veins. in normal circumstances, the blood flows from the superficial system to the deep system through valves at certain location, the main ones being the saphenofemoral valve in the groin and saphenopopliteal valve in the knee. In between, the two systems are also connected by channels called perforators which also have valves. When a person has been standing erect for long duration and after many years, there is back flow through these valves and pooling of blood in the superficial system and appears as a bag of worms when it becomes severe. There can also be ulcers in the legs due to pooling of blood and these can become non healing with discoloration of the foot.

If your family doctor has made a diagnosis of varicose veins then you must consult the recommended doctor and I guess he is a surgeon. Varicose veins are treated by surgeons and particularly vascular surgeons.

You might be asked to get a venous Doppler scan of the affected limb to be done and treatment will depend on the Doppler scan findings.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
