Suggest Treatment For Uterine Prolapse In An Elderly Person

Question: When I had my daughter 30 years ago I felt about a few days after the birth when I went to the bathroom something slightly hanging out of my vagina. When I went to the doctor she told me that I had a slightly prolapsed uterus. As I got older the uterus was hanging out more. A number of years ago my doctor gave me a pessary to use. She said I could keep it in for a few months and then take it out for a few days or put it in every day and then take it out at night. I am now 65 years old and to be honest haven't been to a gynecologist in about 7 years. I had been using the pessary regularly but haven't used it for the past 6 months or so. Can my uterus completely fall out? When I go to the bathroom I feel a bulge and it is hanging about an inch. When I look at my vagina with a mirror I can see it. I don't have any leakage or
anything. I plan on going to see a gynecologist very soon. Please advise. Should I do the kegel exercises
to strengthen my muscles?

Brief Answer:
About prolapse

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

There are different degrees of uterine prolapse. Your uterus will not completely drop out of your body, because it is still attached to ligaments. So it is still attached to your body. That said, it can come partially out of your vagina.

Kegel exercises can help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles which help support the vagina, bladder, and rectum. But you may need more help than Kegels at this point.

Are you still able to use the pessary and has that been successful at keeping your uterus in place? You may want to try that again until you see the gynecologist. But definitely see the gynecologist.

The gynecologist may offer you other options if the prolapse is severe, such as surgery which can provide complete resolution to the problem.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
