Brief Answer:
You should not do weights and exercises uness declared fit by surgeon

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in.

I have read through your condition in detail.
Umbilical hernia is a surgical condition and cannot be treated with medicine or rest.

What happens is the muscles in the front of abdomen near the umbilicus split due to increased tension and then the intestine and fat starts coming out to lie just below the skin.

In the beginning, the swelling is small but with time it will increase. It is important to consult your surgeon and discuss the need for any surgical procedure to correct your condition. Umbilical hernias are usually sealed with a mesh and this prevents the intestines and fat from herniating through the defect in umbilical region.

You should not do any exercise and lifting weights as this will increase the pressure inside the abdomen and complicate the hernia. The hernia will enlarge and might become a serious condition. Please avoid doing weight and exercises at the gym unless your surgeon has examined you clinically and has declared you fit.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Brief Answer:
Light games and exercises are permitted as long abdomen not under stress

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

It is important not to stress your abdominal muscles.

Since your doctor has described it as a small soft swelling then it must be small. At the moment it is not an emergency and you can continue playing light tennis or doing treadmill. Main intention is to avoid contractions of abdominal muscles.

The problem with workout involving back, triceps and biceps and legs is that it eventually also exercises the abdomen muscles as the movements are all interconnected. If is is still a small one and confirmed by the surgeon then you can exercise slowly without allowing stress on the abdomen and causing pressure on the hernia.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
