Posted on Wed, 23 Aug 2017
Question: I'm wondering what type of epilepsy I have. I don't lose consciousness or awareness when having a fit. I only shake on the right side of my body which lasts up to 1hr non stop. I often get a familiar feeling almost like a vision or thought accompanied by a bad taste and nausea. I started getting epilepsy after having my nose shattered. I take carbamazepine to try and control the fits. My main triggers are flashing lights and lack of sleep

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic for your health concern

The seizures you experience is temporal lobe epilepsy, which arises from temporal lobe of brain.
Since you do not loose consciousness while having the seizure, the specific type of Temporal lobe eilepsy simple partial seizures.

Temporal lobe epilepsy is characterized by sensation of aura like altered smell, taste, visual/auditory hallucination etc along with motor disturbance like involuntary muscle twitching, spasm, lip smacking etc.
I believe that you must have already undergone evaluation including EEG and brain imaging.
Previous history of head trauma can cause Temporal lobe epilepsy. Other causes include infection, tumor, AV malformations and sometimes there will be no identifiable cause(idiopathic).

Carbamazepine is the medication of choice for treatment of Temporal lobe epilepsy. Continue Carbamazepine and avoid triggering factors.
