Question: I am a 84 year old active male Caucasian. In October I was doing some upper body exercise when I felt a strain and irritation in my left shoulder and neck. I went to the Doctor and was sent to physical therapy where they prodded, pounded, massaged and manipulated my body for a month with no avail. I have pain almost 24/7 on the left side of my neck, the neck is slightly swollen on the left side and the tendons pop when I turn my head. At times when I turn my head or try and read the pain is intense. I will wake up at night because of the pain. I have tried taking, Advil, Alieve, using XXXXXXX XXXXXXX and bio- freeze the problem still exists and is getting no better. The only way I seem to get any sleep is by taking a sleep aid which is only masking the symptoms and elevating the problem. I am unable to exercise as I would like, and in many instances it if greatly inferring with my daily routine. Presently I my daily medications are, Toprol, Vytorin, thyroid medication 25mcm, Nexium (as needed) and 85mg of aspirin. I feel It has been too long for the injury it to be a simple muscle strain, any suggestions on a remedy?

Brief Answer:
Cervical spondylosis

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

Hot seem to be suffering from Cervical spondylosis. This is due to degenerative changes in the spine in the neck that can cause stiffness, pain and similar symptoms as described.

I suggest you get an Xray of the cervical spine alert upload for my review. Also an MRI of the cervical spine may be required because you have some nerve compression symptoms.

Avoid bending neck forward or lifting weights. Avoid using thick pillow. Apply hot packs to the affected region. Perform physiotherapy for neck range of movement and neck extension exercises.

You need Thicolchicoside as a muscle relaxant as well which is a prescription medicine.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.
