Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Breathlessness Due To Obstructive Lung Disease

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: I feel like I am having to draw a deeper breath than is happening naturally. When I lean back in a seat it takes a little more effort. This has happened before and I've never had it checked out. This time it started yesterday evening along with a minor headache. Last night it felt like my heart started racing a couple times while laying down. It returned to normal again.

I would appreciate your thoughts on these symptoms. Thank you. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Likely to be Shortness of breath due to obstructive lung disease

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on your description, it appears to be shortness of breath due to obstructive lung disease such as allergic asthma. It can be related to a lower respiratory tract infection, too. However a cardiac cause for the shortness of breath and palpitations should be ruled out primarily. EKG, X ray chest, ABGs, Pulmonary function tests can be advised to gather more information based on the clinical examination , in consultation with your doctor. Avoid ibuprofen as NSAIDs can increase the risk for recurrent wheezy asthma attacks. Acetaminophen or paracetamol would be safer options. Further management and treatment would depend upon the cause that is isolated in the workup.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
