Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Mirena

Question: i had the mirena fitted 7 months ago and i still have very heavy periods an they stay for longer what should i do ???

Hi XXXX, I have gone through your question and understand your concern. Mirena is a medicated intrauterine contraceptive device,generally used in patients with menstrual problems. Heavy and prolonged bleeding, intermenstrual spotting and mood swings are common side-effects of mirena for the initial 6-9 months, after which they subside.
I would suggest you to take tranexemic acid tablets during periods to reduce the flow and duration, after having the prescription from your OBGYN specialist.
If the bleeding is still heavy and prolonged after one year of insertion of mirena, then the decision for removal of mirena may be taken.

thank you for your answer , i do understand it takes awhile to settle , but i always had heavy periods even when i was on the pill ''cilest'' ive had two children an decided to have the mirena fitted as it might help to reduced me periods. iam so exausted and tired all the time. i have to monter my next two cycles. i also had the implant fitted several years ago and it didnt agree with me either , it had to be removed. will my periods ever be normal .

1. whether you ever had endometrial biopsy for heavy bleeding ?
2. Is there not even a minimal improvement after mirena insertion?
Sometimes, mirena do not suit some women and it has to be removed.
However heavy periods even on contraceptive pills needs close attention.

the anwer to your questions is no ive never had a endomertrial biopsy done , can i ask what that is . and no not even a minimal improvement after in was inserted. in my opinion it is worse as it stays longer 8 to 10 days .ive had pain in my left side for a while when it was inserted but i have not had it since that.do you think the mirena will have to be removed and how will it be removed.

Endometrial biopsy is the pathological examination of the tissue which is taken out from the uterus using few surgical instruments. It is an essential investigation in your case, as you heavy periods are not cured by hormones. In the biopsy, the pre malignant and malignant conditions are ruled out.

Mirena should be removed in your case as your bleeding has worsened and will cause more blood loss and anemia which will deteriorate your general health.

I would suggest you to consult an OBGYN specialist to get properly examined, investigated and treated accordingly. You may need surgical intervention also, depending upon the diagnosis.

thank you so much for your help,
this has eased my mind , the reson why iam concerned is because my sister has the mirena inserted and has no problems at all , so i knew there was someting not right, ive had my blood done an are waiting on results off that , hopefully it will settle in the next few months an i wont need to have the endometrial biopsy done.would you have any idea off what you think the problem is .

Hi XXXX, I would still advise you to get endometrial biopsy done, as heavy flow due to hormonal disturbances usually get corrected by contraceptive pills or mirena.
The heavy bleeding which occurs cyclicaly is usually corrected by hormones, but in your case there is no improvement.
Chances of malignancy needs to be ruled out.
