Suggest Treatment For Swollen Lymph Nodes

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: I have had swollen lymph nodes for about 8 months now. I have been treated with 4 different antibiotics and had an MRI which was normal. Should I be concerned? The ENT doctor is puzzled. Should I see a immunologist?

Brief Answer:
Some hints on direction provided ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Based on the information provided, it seems as though an MRI has ruled out the possibility of a growth or tumor of any sort which is great news.

With a rise in your WBC, we should suspect an infection. But your doctor seems to have only suspected a bacterial infection, but what he has failed to consider is an infection of another source which can easily raise your WBC's. But with your raised neutrophils, we can suspect the following:

+Bacterial infection: Suspected and tried to treat
+Acute inflammation
+Inflammation in abdomen (e.g. appendicitis, etc.): I would recommend an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis to rule these out
+Cancer: Were your basophils and eosinophils normal? Also check if mature myeloid cells were raised?

You could go about the above mentioned investigations or take this up with your doctor. I hope you find my response helpful ma'am. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
