Posted on Mon, 20 Jul 2015
Question: I took klacid for 5 days. On the fourth day I have UTI and took Ciprofloxacin 500mg. On the second day my eyes are swollen. I did take piriton and Zyrtec but my eyes are still swollen. I stopped Cipro on the second day. What is causing swollen eyes? Side effects of the medicine I took?
My eyes are swollen after the fourth day of taking klacid and the first day of taking cipro. I stopped taking cipro and finished taking klacid. I took Zyrtec for two days but swollen eyes don't seem to be subsiding.

Current Medications -Zyrtec, Known Allergies-Only to prawns and crabs

These symptoms indicate allergic reaction to medicines.

Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic.

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history and the photo attached with the question.
It seems from the history that you are having swelling of the eyes following use of antibiotic drugs like ciprofloxacin and klacid tablets for treatment of UTI.

Since you are having itchy rashes associated with swelling of the eyes, these symptoms indicate allergic reaction to the antibiotic drugs and most probably ciprofloxacin.

The treatment of this condition is to stop the drug and to take antiallergic drugs.
Since you have stopped the drug and you have taken anti-allergic drugs like Zyrtec and piriton these symptoms will resolve no need to be worried.

Local application of cold compression to the eyes will also help in fast resolution of symptoms.
If the rashes and swelling of the eyes persist then a small course of steroid drugs may be required.
Since the rashes and swelling are still persisting, I advice you consult your doctor for prescription of steroid drugs after examination and confirmation of the diagnosis.

Hope this information is helpful to you.

Dear doctor,
I've stopped Cipro when my eyes started to swell. It has been the third day I stopped taking the antibiotic but my eyes are getting worse. My rashes are not associated with the antibiotic coz I was diving and had some rashes with blisters. Therefore I took klacid for skin infection.

Brief Answer:
Localized allergic reaction limited to eyes can also occur.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

Allergic reaction to antibiotic drugs is commonly seen and this can occur as eye swelling in mild forms. Since you have stopped the drug (ciprofloxacin) and you have taken antiallergic drugs like Zyrtec, no need to be worried.

Along with systemic antiallergic drug, I would like to had local antiallergic and decongestant drugs like Ocurest- AH eye drops or any other similar antiallergic eye drops. Along with the eye drops cold compression will help you.

Hope this information is helpful to you.

I tried cold pack from the freezer yesterday but it didn't seem to work. They are worse this morning as compared to yesterday. I will try cold normal saline now. Can you please tell me if what mild sterioid medication can I take for it to subside faster? I have a wedding to attend on Sunday.

Usually mild steroid eye drops like flurometholone or lotepredonolone are sufficient in these cases.
