Brief Answer:
May be an abscess / cellulitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: male/77 - hard spot swelling - below an to the right of the right knee - swelling started here and went down the leg - with redness but no heat - Aspirin reduced the swelling and redness - visited a Doctor - no blood clot - have this fairly large swollen spot that has remained ...

As per the history you have provided this looks to be a problem of infected cyst or so or an abscess that has developed on its own, hence the spread to the lower leg which got reduced but the original spot has remained inflamed.

I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Get the blood tests for CBC, sugar, thyroid functions.
Clinical evaluation by a General Surgeon for a probable diagnosis, order investigations, ultrasonography and color doppler examination and proper medication which may be an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory medication.
Also may need an incision and drainage of there is local abscess formation.

I hope, this answer helps in getting a proper and an early diagnosis and to get a proper curative treatment.
Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
