Brief Answer:
Inflamed bursa likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Possibilities that may need to be considered for a painful lump above the knee joint with difficulty in movement include enlarged bursa, lipomas, cysts, growths from underlying connective tissue etc.

Sometimes, a fluid filled structure just above the knee cap called supra patellar bursa is inflamed, with pain, due to some infection or trauma and the process causes fibrosis and inflammation, making a lump like structure above the knee cap.

I would suggest getting this evaluated by an orthopedician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. You may get the X-ray of the area affected and FNAC (fine needle aspiration cytology) of lump under his/her guidance.
It is best to give rest to the knee joint continue taking pain killers and using a knee cap. Keep the leg elevated in two pillows while resting. Doing a hot fomentation will also help. In case the swelling enlarges and becomes acutely tender then needs an immediate examination to rule out an infection.
I hope this answers your query.
