Suggest Treatment For Swelling Near The Groin Area

Posted on Wed, 14 Oct 2015
Question: A male aged 54 has had several episodes of swelling near his groin. The swelling later bursts with white pus like fluid. Several months ago his family doctor said it was an infection caused by sweat glands since this male is 6'4" approximately 300 pounds and works hard doing physical labor. THe doctor told him that it could be infected from hair follicles. He gave him a prescription and sure enough it went away. Three weeks later the same occurrence. This time, no medication but the swelling was more severe and therefor more pus when it burst it was both bloody and pus like fluid. It went away after a lot of pain and fever. Two to three weeks go by and the same occurrence, this time the swelling was along more almost the size of two fingers lengthwise inside the crease of his leg and testicles. Very large, very swollen, very painful but he worked through it, it burst and so we continue the cycle. Is there more to this and what type of doctor should he visit rather than his family practice doctor? Thank you

Brief Answer:
He should consult dermatologist.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

It would be much better to consult dermatologist rather than family doctor. From your description he may suffer from hair follicles inflammation caused by bacterial infection. However in some cases infection looking issue can be caused by condition called hidradenitis suppurativa (so called acne inversa). This condition usually has to be treated much more aggressive than typical infection. And left untreated can spread to surrounding tissues and cause much destruction.
As the infection recurs, bacteria should be identified with swab test. Also diabetes has to be ruled out.

So dermatologist would be the best choice at this point.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
